3 Years With Ascent
"Build it and they will come"
I was born and raised in Roseville - it's been really cool to see this town go from boring and tiny to the flourishing community it is now. My wife and I are high school sweethearts and have just celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. We have two great kids - the oldest is 20 and just moved out of the house. We don't see him as often as we would like to even though he lives close by; I guess that's typical for a 20 year old. My youngest is almost 11 and he is a total sports enthusiast. He is very into soccer, basketball and the big one is baseball. We are always throwing the ball around or going to the batting cages.
I like to do basic landscaping and yard work around the house. There always seems to be something to do or build - whether it's a playground for the kids or a storage shed for my wife. I also like to work on cars; I've always had cars that needed something done to them and now my older son has a car that seems to always need something done to it as well. I've been teaching him how to diagnose problems himself and upgrade the car on his own. My wife and I have a shared passion of doing athletic stuff with the kids. For the most part, we don't take a lot of time off; we occasionally take trips to Hawaii or back to Japan where my wife and her family are from... but I go a little stir-crazy on the planes.
I started working in construction because my stepdad was a plumber and he gave me the opportunity to work with him during the summer. This was a great foot-in-the-door for the rest of my career. Most of my experience has been in concrete, where I started in 1992. I was fortunate enough to have a boss who gave me all the opportunities I needed for advancement in the business. By the time I left concrete, I was managing the shop. I did a couple year stint at Intel doing computer stuff but I knew I needed to return to construction - I've got to be in the great outdoors. I knew Dan Roy and Dave Edwards (both with Ascent) for a long time and when they were coaching my kids in baseball, a position opened at Ascent and they recruited me.
I was asked what I love about Ascent and first and foremost - it's the people. I was taken aback by the family feel of this company; previously it was all work - the environment was not as personable as it is here - it's outstanding. The overall package, as far as the building and all the phases of work I do here at Ascent is something I really like. It's a challenge - and that is something I really love.
